The Big Tuna is a privately owned 40ft Riviera Flybridge, not a typical commercial charter boat. Owner-operated by Captain Luis, this vessel is equipped with top-tier fishing gear and crewed by Captain Emilio and mate Leo — a team dedicated to making every trip exceptional.

Fishing That Goes the Extra Mile

\n\n

Unlike most charters in Casa de Campo, the Big Tuna ventures 15 to 30 miles offshore to reach prime fishing grounds, including fish aggregating devices (FADs) used by local commercial fishermen. This commitment to exploring further means better chances at landing trophy fish.

\n\n

Trolling & Pelagic Fishing

\n\n

Target mahi-mahi, wahoo, marlin, and tuna (seasonal). The boat is rigged with dredges and teasers for marlin and planers for wahoo baits. For marlin specifically, an 8-hour trip is recommended to cover enough ground and maximize your chances — marlin fishing requires patience and distance.

\n\n

Deep Drop Fishing

\n\n

For bottom species, the Big Tuna is equipped with two Lindgren Pitman electric reels for deep drop fishing. Target yelloweye snapper from 450 feet, and grouper and queen snapper from 800 to 1,300 feet. Each rod is rigged with 5-6 hooks and a 3lb weight.

\n\n

You can mix trolling and deep drop on the same trip if one method is slow — just keep in mind that trolling grounds are 17-20 miles out while deep drop spots are 5-6 miles from shore, so once you switch from trolling to deep drop, you cannot switch back.

Onboard Comfort

\n\n

The Riviera 40 Flybridge features air conditioning and a full kitchen with stove, microwave, deep fryer, grill, and refrigerator. Two private cabins are available if you need to rest between bites. The crew will prepare your catch as fresh ceviche or grill it right on board — just tell them how you like it.

Non-Fishing Charters

\n\n

The Big Tuna also offers leisure charters to some of the most beautiful spots in the Dominican Republic: Palmilla Beach (the best beach in the area, 45 minutes away), Catalina Island (30 minutes), and Saona Island (55 minutes). All three offer sea turtle sightings and incredible snorkeling.

\n\n

Non-fishing charters include the same beverages, and the crew will cook lunch on the grill or deep fryer — just bring your own burgers, steaks, or fish and let them handle the rest.
